Running Cross Walk Guy

I thought this was hilarious! Check it out!

Weekend in Toledo!

We went to Toledo this last weekend and it was really fun! The place is so gorgeous!! We woke up early Friday morning so that we could run over to the casa de nuesrto professor and see if he needed help with his large family and getting them to the train station in time. So we left the house around 7:30 and got there to do nothing but just kinda get in the way and watch people run around their little house for a bit, and then proceeded to run to the train station along with the professor, his wife and 7 kids, along with Paige and 2 other girls from the program that went to watch the chaos too. So there were a bunch of us with backpacks, pushing strollers and dragging children through the streets of Alcalá at a rapid pace, and we barely got there in time to catch the train that we needed to take us to the OTHER train station that would take us to Toledo.
Come to find out, the other train was a bullet train, so we expressed our way to a new city (although the bullet train didn’t exactly live up to its name, it wasn’t as fast as I thought it would be, you know, like a bullet, haha). We got there and stepped out onto a platform that looked like it was from like the 1400’s or so, which was really cool because if I remember right, it actually was. We then proceeded to walk through Toledo like ducks following their mother, and got some pretty weird looks because of it while we pulled suitcases and took pictures up this huge hill for like half and hour to 45 minutes. The hotel wasn’t really easy to find, because the streets in Toledo are crazy! If you were to look at the layout, it looks like the person who was in charge of picking where the streets would go, gave a child a piece of paper and a pencil and told them to have fun, came back, and put the streets in the places that the child had drawn. There is really no rhyme or reason to the streets at all! But we finally found the hotel, were placed with our new roommates for the weekend, dropped our stuff off in the rooms and ran to the Cathedral for a tour.
This Cathedral is gorgeous! I guess its like the 3rd largest in the world or something along those lines and is very impressive to look at. We entered through the “Door of the Clock” and the name makes sense, seeing as there is a large clock over the door, and into the coldest Cathedral I have ever been in! (I say that like I’ve been in a ton, haha. But I have been in a good 2 or 3 of them!) We walked around in a group partially because we needed to so that we could hear the students that were giving the tour and partially to share body heat so that nobody left the building with hypothermia or anything. We went around and saw all the different parts of the cathedral, and one weird, kinda creepy thing is that all throughout the Cathedral there were hats of the previous arch bishops (or whatever the Catholic Church calls its leaders, I don’t remember) hanging from random places of the ceiling, and underneath where they are hanging, is where the bishop is buried. They leave the hats hanging from the ceiling till they rot off, haha! So there are random red hats hanging all over the place.
Then they set us free to walk around for a little bit before we had to be back to check into the hotel and make another appointment for a tour of a synagogue. So we walked around looking at shops, and just about every turn we made was another photo-op! These streets are beautiful! They’re just little and not very pedestrian friendly, but every one looks like a painting! The old buildings with little balconies coming out of every window with little potted plants on the balconies! Its beautiful! Needless to say I took a million pictures of the streets! Some of them are so small that you can put one hand on one building, and the other hand on the building that’s “across the street”! Later we went on a tour of a little place that used to be a synagogue for one of their kings but is now a museum, which was great, and then we were set free for the evening to roam the streets and shop and whatever. So that’s just what we did! There are tons of stores, and all of them are about the same, Toledo is famous for its swords and daggers and such, so all the stores have those, and black and gold plates and jewelry, fans and inappropriate t-shirts, haha. But I did find a clothing store that I just fell in love with because they were having a sale and there was some freakin cute stuff! So I walked out of there that night with a new pencil skirt and a shirt for pretty cheap! Like 11 Euros for the both of them! But after that, we just made our way through the maze of streets and back to the hotel to hang out there and have bonding experiences with like 25 girls crammed into one room, one boy, all sharing experiences like most embarrassing moment or worst date ever. It was nice to get to know most everyone on a more personal level. That was fun!
The next morning we woke up, ate the nice continental breakfast the hotel provided (muffins and hot chocolate) and went to the Catholic mass that started at 9. Most of us had never been and wanted to have the experience. It was really weird for me! For 1) it was in Spanish, so I had no idea what they were saying or chanting or singing, and 2), I’m not catholic, so I didn’t know what everything meant and why they kept making this weird smelling steam like stuff in something that looks like a really round, silver oil lamp that hangs from a chain that they kept swinging around while the steam poured out of it, why we had to keep standing up then sitting back down, then we would kneel, then sit again, then stand, then… who knows. It was quite unpredictable for me! And kinda awkward when they did the sacrament and a whole 3 full rows of us didn’t get up to partake (but it was wine, I’m pretty sure). It was an interesting experience to have tho!
We left a bit before it was over, well I think it was a bit before it was over, to make it back to the hotel to meet with everyone for a walk around Toledo at 10, which was probably my favorite part of the trip! All we did was walk around the walls of the city, but it was the most gorgeous walk! We started out walking over a bridge that goes over a big river (not the prettiest river, it was kinda dirty, but water is always a nice effect) then walked for a couple hours outside of the city, up some hills, and when we reached the top it was breathtaking! I was seeing the awesome sites that they put on post cards and taking amazing pictures of my own! The rest of the day was just finishing the walk around the city that ended by crossing another amazing bridge into the city and hitting just about every store that Toledo had left that we hadn’t been to yet, visiting a modern art museum that used to be another church for another ruler, and checking out of the hotel. We walked back to the train station, and found that we could have avoided the entire 45 minute very uphill walk in the beginning of the trip and replaced it with a slightly uphill, 10 minute walk, but hey, its all part of the experience!!!
That night we got home, unpacked and hit the nightlife of Alcalá, kinda. We went and got pastries with this girl named Suzi because it was her birthday. It was funny, she would walk around telling random people that it was her birthday, but she would say “Hoy es mi cumpleanos” without the “ñ” so I’m pretty sure nobody knew what she was saying. Haha! But she did successfully get a group of people in the restaurant to sing Happy Birthday to her, and then another group of kids in the street, who even went so far as to kiss her on the cheek! It was hilarious!

Week 2!!!

So...not a lot has been going on, but I have been doing lots, if that even makes sense! Tuesday was Spanish class and we are trying to learn about the difference between ser and estar. I say trying because that’s really all that it is! haha! We do worksheets and such, and talk about it in class, and its starting to sink in, but it’s more difficult than I had previously thought! And we are now moving on to past tense stuff, and me and my roommate had a different answer on just about every one of the questions on that one also. haha! I am happy to report that after much discussion, I was right on about half of them and she was right on the other half, so I felt pretty good about that! So I guess the language is coming ok! I am starting to talk to the family a lot more, not just when they ask questions and stuff, but in normal conversation, throwing in my 2 cents here and there, then just kinda listening again. haha. I think its still kinda at the point where they are getting used to us and we are getting used to them, but they are really nice and talk back when we try to say something and keep the conversation going for as long as we can, which normally is a good few sentences long! Woot!
Tuesday we went to a park that’s up in the middle of Madrid right by the Prado museum to go study. We have had a lot of reading to do for our trip this weekend and for our classes and such, so a few of us thought it would be a good idea to go there and study. It was so gorgeous! Before I had been to the front of the park, but not the back (I guess this place is HUGE!) so we walked to the back, and there was this little lake, with this almost roman-like building behind it, (see picture) that was kinda worn down, with steps leading right down to the water, then there were little canoes with people inside of them, of course, paddling around this little lake in the middle of the park.(see the pictures I included) There was also a guy playing a saxophone near the lake so that people would give him money. I am a starving college student and only had the little amount that I brought with me to buy a pastry later, so I wasn’t able to tip him, but he played beautifully on that thing, so nice and smooth. The only downer to that was that it was the same song over and over, so by the time it was dark and we were leaving, I probably could have either written out the music myself or played the harmony right along with him! Haha! But picture this… we were all on a blanket, under the trees, sun shining, next to a beautiful lake, fountain running in the distance and a saxophone playing background music!!! How perfect is that?! Pretty much Madrid is my new favorite place to study!!! But after that, we went took the 5 minute Metro ride to the Plaza del Sol, bought a pastry (they’re called Neopolitana chocolate, oh man they are SO SO good!!!), headed back into the Metro and went home! All in all it was a good night!
Yesterday was about the same thing, except without the beautifulness of the park, and just my room. Haha. We have really had a lot to do reading wise, and we have all wanted to get it done so we can enjoy the weekend in Toledo. So I finished all the reading for 2 of my classes, did my Spanish homework, did some more reading, then went to bed. So not quite the picturesque day like Tuesday but it was really quite productive!
Then today we had Spanish again and spent a good hour on the "pluscuamperfecto" tense of the past verbs, and I got it right in the last 5 minutes of the discussion, haha, along with the rest of the class. So class was pretty intense today. We were planning on doing just about the same thing as yesterday for studying, but we (we being me and Paige, my new sidekick aka roommate haha) decided that we can’t just waist our time sitting in a room and not experiencing Spain, so every day we are going to pick a different spot where we are going to study, whether its just on the street or a new park, or whatever. Today we picked the Library. Exotic, I know. Haha, but on the way to the Library we ran into some other girls in the program, the ones that are in that movie I sent you, who were on their way up to Madrid to see the Temple and maybe do, I think its called TRC, where you act like you are an investigator for the missionaries, and I decided that was a little bit more intriguing to me than going to the Library, so me and Paige parted ways and I headed to Madrid.
The Temple is GORGEOUS!!! It looks a bit like the Mt. Timp one, but not quite the same. and the TRC thing didn’t start till 8:15 we found out, so we weren’t able to do that tonight because we have to go to bed early tonight to be ready for the early start tomorrow! So we took pictures, again went to the Plaza for pastries and came home to still more reading and packing! Woo-hoo!!!

Week One Ending

The last couple days have been good day too, nothing too exciting happened. It was the first day of my History classes with Prof. Shumway on Wednesday, and those were good. I have like a 2 and a half hour break between classes tho, so me and Paige and these other people went to a Panaderia and got breakfast. It was the cutest place! Just little, but the outside has the canape thing over the big window in the front that displays the pastries. And when you walk in theres this overwhelmingly good smell of freshly cooked bread and pastries. I even got up the nerve to talk to one of the ladies that was working there and ask what one of the things was, like what they put into it and such, so I asked... and she responded... and I understood!!! Woot! haha! I even ended up buying what I asked about. It was almost like a croissant thing but on the inside it had ham and cheese. It was REALLY good! I also met a new friend yesterday. I guess not new, we are in the same program and had classes and stuff together before, but we are a lot alike and get along really easily and take a lot of the same classes, so we sat for a while in the University and did homework at one of the tables, with the other foreign exchange students from Japan sitting at a table next to us being very loud! Speaking of the Japanese students... its weird to hear them talk! Its quite the accent, the whole Japanese/Spanish thing going on there! haha! Its kinda funny!

Oh my Spanish class, every time I go to that class I just get so nervous! Like, walking down the hall to the classroom, and knowing what coming just freaks me out! Nothing is wrong with the class and she's really funny and makes the class exciting (well at least the first part of class. Its hard to keep a class exciting for 2 hours!) its just knowing that while I'm there I'm not going to know everything that she is saying and I probably will have to have her repeat questions that she ask me a few times over and it'll be embarrassing. Once I'm there I'm fine I guess. Its just the whole getting there part of it that freaks me out! haha!

We also went to the discotequa (I don't know how to spell it) a couple nights ago! Well we ended up going to 2 different, we'll call them clubs, that night! We all met at the Plaza at 11, but found out from a group of college students from somewhere else that also happened to be meeting at the same place that we were, that the club that we were planning on going to didn't even open till 12. So this girl in our group that some people met at the school said that there was this other club that was giving out free drinks that she was gonna head to, and we were welcome to tag along (not that the free drinks were enticing or anything, haha. Somos Mormones!!!) So about 25 or 30 of us followed her through the streets of Spain on our way to this club. I'll bet it was pretty funny to see these Mormon college students, all dressed modestly, walking into the club to "get our groove on". haha. But funny or not, we made our way into the club and to the dance floor. It was really fun to "break it down" with everyone and kinda let your guard down, ya know? We were about the only ones that were actually dancing to the blaring music tho (which was all in English, by the way! weird!)! Everyone else was too worried about spilling their drinks to bust a move with the Mormons. But after we had been there for a while we decided to head over to the club that we were going to go to before, and once again the parade of Mormons made their way through the backstreets of Spain. We even picked up a couple natives along the way! haha! This guy Andrew in the group is pretty social and so talked to just about everyone that we saw along the way and invited them to come with us, so we ended up having a few local tag-a-longs coming with us! But I liked the second better. One, because there was a free coat check, and two because it was a little bit bigger, so the cloud of smoke wasn’t quite as thick as the last one, so I didn’t have to hold my breath as long as in the last one. Haha (ok so I didn’t really hold my breath, but it did smell bad!) Needless to say I didn’t get home till pretty late that night and slept into the next day, till around 11 or so.

Then yesterday was the day that we went to the Prado Museum, home to many of the world’s most famous paintings and sculptures. It was so beautiful in there! And its Huge!!! We got there around 11 in the morning, left around 2:30, and didn’t even make it through half of it! I’ve still got 3 months to see everything tho! Our “Mom” had packed us a nice Spanish lunch, so we headed to a park that’s just up the street from the Prado and ate lunch there. It was so nice, sitting in a park, on a park bench, right by a fountain, feeding these cute little birds that were dancing around our feet, and soaking up the sun! It felt like a nice Spring day! We tried to take a siesta (which is now what we have decided to call naps) but with 3 of us on one park bench, it didn’t really work out. Last night we went and got some authentic Spanish ice cream, too! Oh man, it was AMAZING! I guess they just mix it differently or something, but it was dang good!

The First Monday

Today was a good day! It was the first day at the University and they made us take this ridiculously long test to see how good our Spanish is, then we took a tour of the city! Its gorgeous here! Cold, but gorgeous! I can't wait till there are leaves on the trees, it will be SO beautiful then! We got to take a tour with one of the professors and she told us all about the different places that we went. Too bad I couldn't really understand her! I'm sure it would have been interesting! But when that was done we went back to the University and got our bus passes and they let us libre (free)!!!
So me and Paige decided to take a risk and try and ride the bus home alone for the first time, which actually turned out really well! Theres a bus stop right down the street from where we live, so we just got off there and walked like 20 steps till we were home! Which is where we ate lunch, which was really good, but they forgot to tell us that the potato and veggie soup was just the first course, cuz when we were done with this quite filling soup, they brought out hamburger patty things and a side of potatoes for the main dish. Lunch is the big meal of the day here, so if you really want to eat for the day, this is the time to do it. So... taking full advantage of the food that was placed in front of me, I ate it all!!! MMM-MMM-MMM!!!
Tomorrow a bunch of us are going to go to Madrid for the first time to take a look and see what there is to see, then go to a cafe and get some hot chocolate. I hear its to die for!!! I'm pretty excited about that! I'll remember to bring my camera then so that I'll have pictures of my new hometown and what going on for all to see!

Day One

Well... I finally got here! And let me tell you what... sitting on your butt all day in a plane sure is exhausting! Haha! I left Utah around 11 and spent the entire rest of the day flying from Chicago to Philadelphia, and then finally took the 7 hour plane ride to Spain, where I think I got a total of 10 minutes of sleep! But I did get a complimentary dinner (chicken and potatoes) and breakfast (a danish and OJ) which was good! But I was exhausted to say the least!
When we got off the plane, things weren't too bad! They even had English on the signs so I wasn't too confused! Yay! We then met with just about everyone else who had come that day and took off to a bus that was waiting for us, picked up the people who had come yesterday and made our way to the Plaza.
This is where me and Paige (my new roommate) met the family that we will be living with for the next 3 months! They are really nice and really talkative, but the only thing is... I just can't understand a thing that is coming out of their mouths! I hope its just the lack of sleep and therefore lack of concentration on anything that is doing this to me, but this whole all Spanish all the time thing is crazy! Luckily as me and Paige talk to each other in the native language of Spain, things are starting to come back to me, but I'm still so novice in my Spanish skills, its kinda embarrassing! But... I do have 3 months to work it all out!

We also had our first adventure today while trying to walk around the city of Alcala (where we are living, its right outside of Madrid) and find the college that we'll be going to. Accoring to our family, its only about a 20 minute walk, which isn't too bad seeing as I did that everyday at BYU anyways, but... surprise... we got lost and ended up walking around the city for about an hour before we decided to go home. Well I guess Paige decided to go home and I followed seeing as I had no idea where we were! But it all worked out! I think I will now go to bed and see if somehow I can get over this jet lag before church tomorrow!
